A diaphragm pump is a type of positive displacement pump that uses the combined action of a diaphragm moving back and forth and suitable valves on either side of the diaphragm (ball valve, flapper valve, etc.) to move liquids.
AODD pump, this is the pump to use when a single pump needs to handle a wide variety of liquid types and viscosity. They are self-priming, lightweight and designed for thick liquids. Air diaphragm pumps are used in virtually all major industries. They are commonly used to carry chemicals, acids and abrasive fluids such as concrete. They are also commonly found in cars and airplanes. There are various types of diaphragm pumps, including but not limited to membrane pumps, air operated double diaphragm pumps (AODD) and pneumatic diaphragm pumps.
Air-operated double-diaphragm (AODD) pumps are designed for pumping viscous fluids, sludges and highly corrosive chemicals without leaks. The AODD pumps have two flexible membranes or diaphragms connected to one shaft. The diaphragms go forward and back, so the fluids can flow as they are supposed to. AODD pumps use compressed air instead of a motor to drive the diaphragm by alternating the direction of air to one of two air chambers on the diaphragm.
An AODD pump is a positive displacement pump that is driven by compressed air. The compressed air is passed from chamber to chamber through a coupled shaft, which allows the chambers to move in unison. Moving back and forth , it fills the other chamber with liquid . At the same time it forces liquid from one chamber into the discharge pipe .
Compressed air enters an air motor when connected to an AODD pump. The air motor pushes a diaphragm, “pushing the liquid out.” The pushed diaphragm is attached to a shaft pulling the opposite diaphragm. The cavity on the other side draws the liquid in. At the bottom and the top of the two cavities are one way valves, usually a ball valve or a flap valve. If a cavity is opened it sucks liquid in . If a cavity is closed it pushes liquid up and out . Then the cavity on one side will close and the cavity on the other will open alternately. This can be done to as much as 400 cycles per minute.
The AODD pumps are virtually leak-free. Leakage will occur only if one or both diaphragms fail, since the wetted parts are sealed from the surrounding environment by stationary seals. A general maintenance programmer, such as regular diaphragm replacement, should follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. The supply of compressed air has the advantage of pressure balancing, which reduces the wear of the diaphragm in comparison to a diaphragm pump driven mechanically.
AODD pumps can manage abrasive, high viscosity fluids as well as sludges and slurries. Also, they are very good for shear sensitive fluids due to the gentle pumping action. The four internal check valves are generally made with a ball (or cone)/seat or a flap. Ball valves provide a better seal and are less susceptible to wear than flap valves. Flap-type valves are hinged and fatigue at the flexing point with long use. Ball valves are less prone to wear because the ball rotates freely as it works and can find another position on the seat. The advantage of flap type check valves is that they can pass large solids suspended in the pumped fluid more readily.
An AODD pump can be run dry indefinitely because there are no internal seals or moving parts that need lubrication or cooling. AODD pumps are self-priming and some can have a suction lift up to 8m.
AODD pumps are air powered rather than electric so they are suitable for use in hazardous areas. An AODD pump can be safely submerged as long as the air vent is above the liquid level.
